Damodar Valley Corporation
India’s first multipurpose river valley project of independent India.
DVC, a legacy to the people of India, emerged as a culmination of attempts made over a whole century to control the wild and erratic Damodar river. The river spans over an area of 25,000 sq. kms covering the states of Bihar (now Jharkhand) & West Bengal.
The Damodar Valley has been ravaged frequently by floods of varying intensities and the first of the major recorded flood dates back to 1730. Thereafter serious floods occurred at regular intervals, but it was the flood of 1943 that left the worst devastation in its wake. As a result, the Governor of Bengal appointed a Board of Inquiry headed by the Maharaja of Burdwan and the noted physicist Dr. Meghnad Saha as member. In their report, the Board suggested creation of an authority similar to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) of United States of America. The Government of India then appointed Mr. W.L. Voorduin, a senior engineer of the TVA to make recommendations for comprehensive development of the valley. Accordingly, in August, 1944, Mr. Voorduin submitted his “Preliminary Memorandum on the Unified Development of the Damodar River”.
The Corporation came into existence on the 7th July, 1948 as the first multipurpose river valley project of independent India.

DVC–CIL Power Private Limited
A strategic joint venture for reliable and future-ready power infrastructure.
DVC–CIL Power Private Limited is a 50:50 joint venture between Damodar Valley Corporation and Coal India Limited, formed to develop a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project at Chandrapura, Bokaro, Jharkhand.
The joint venture combines DVC’s power generation expertise with CIL’s resource strength to support India’s growing energy needs. Through this partnership, DVC–CIL aims to strengthen baseload power capacity, promote regional development, create employment opportunities, and contribute to industrial growth through reliable and efficient power infrastructure.

Project Location
Chandrapura, Jharkhand
The DVC-CIL Chandrapura Thermal Power Project is located at Chandrapura in Bokaro district, Jharkhand, as a brownfield expansion of the existing Chandrapura Thermal Power Station. The project is planned with 2 × 800 MW ultra-supercritical units, strengthening the region’s power generation capacity.
The site benefits from established power infrastructure and connectivity, with Chandrapura Railway Station approximately 3 km away and Bokaro Steel City serving as the district headquarters. The location also provides access to the existing DVC power network and supporting infrastructure in the region.
The project’s strategic location, existing power-generation ecosystem, and connectivity make Chandrapura a suitable site for developing additional generation capacity to support growing energy demand and strengthen energy security.
